THE OBSIDIAN NIGHT

Her heart beat fast. Sweat trickled down her face .
Her throat was dry and for some reason her mind was clouded. "I have to think-fast", she thought to herself. Wait, she couldn't remember why she had to react with so much urgency. Slowly, Sheila started retracing her thought a few minutes back. It was 10:00 PM and she had just excused herself from the C.U fellowship. She needed to take a quick call of nature so she rushed outside to the ladies. She remembered the fresh evening breeze which carried the aroma of rain. Her hair had danced with the wind, teasing her eyes as she gazed at the blanket of stars above the obsidian sky. "Remind me to write a story about this!" she shouted cheerfully to no one in particular.

A cold shiver ran down her spine. "Must be the cold", she thought. She hugged her shoulders and quickened her step towards her destination. The wind had stopped, which was a blessing because she was now shivering. The hairs on the back of her neck tingled uncomfortably, something was eerily wrong. "Aaaargh, don't be a chicken", she brushed it off. "Cookadoodledoooo" she added while smiling.
Something cut off her momentary glee. There was a smell, a strong pungent one that couldn't be of nothing less than a cat's decaying carcass. She heard a sound, but wasn't really sure what or who made it. It was dark so she couldn't really see what or who made that sound. "Maybe I'm hearing things" she thought, "Better get out of here."

As Sheila turned to leave, something grabbed her hand yanking her backward. Sheila was caught unawares therefore loosing her balance. What was happening. She was pushed to the wall and rough scaly hands attacked her person. A smell of a mixture of cigarettes and liquor stung her nostrils. Hot waves of adrenaline rushed through her body so she opened her mouth to scream, but her attacker was one step ahead. He grabbed her throat with both hands and started squeezing the breath out of her. She was helpless. Her feet were dangling helplessly as she tried to grope for something-anything.

That was why she had to think fast. Flashes of reality started coming back to her. Someone wanted to rape her.
Then she panicked. She was running out of time for she was already feeling dizzy and light headed.  With all the strength she could master, she yanked her gracefully long fingers at the man's eyes. "AAAAARGH", She heard him scream. He released her and involuntarily took a few steps back. Sheila didn't waste any time, she got to her feet and jumped out the lavatory while screaming as loud as her air- deprived lungs allowed her to. She ran towards the light enumerated by the girls' hostels. Heavy male steps thudded behind her and dust already wafted into the atmosphere wildly complaining of the unwelcomed disturbance. She screamed again and again fleeing wildly. "SHEILA, WHAT'S WRONG?" someone shouted at her while running towards her from the common room. Turning like a windmill, she grossly pointed behind her to the devil of a man who was running after her like an enraged demon.

By then, crowds of students had begun getting out of their rooms to see what the commotion was all about. "WUUUUI ni rapist, UA yeye!!" one of the male students shouted. On seeing that his mission had failed, the attacker did a quick U-turn and started fleeing for his life. "Shika yeye, Ua yeye!" the students chanted in one accord as they chased after the attacker.
Sheila collapsed as soon as we reached towards her. I thought she was unconscious until her eyelids flattered. She was in shock, her eyes darted around taking in the scene which quickly served her quick doses of reality of what just happened. She started sobbing, quietly at first then hysterically. "Hush now honey, no one's gonna hurt you" i whispered to her as she was lifted onto the stretcher. "Everything is alright now", i reassured her.
